Veterans Square Lobby Features Collage Map Artwork by Wendy Gold

In the main lobby of the newly opened Veterans Square Housing Project in Pittsburg CA, residents and visitors are greeted by a custom work of art by San Francisco Bay Area collage artist Wendy Gold.

Veterans Square is a housing project that provides 30 affordable housing units to homeless veterans and others in need.  It is the first housing project of the Apple Affordable Housing Fund of the Housing Trust Silicon Valley, and was also done in partnership with Chase Bank, SAHA (Satellite Affordable Housing Assoc.), and many other government agencies and local entities.

Artist Wendy Gold is well known for creating collage map art by pairing vintage and antique maps, engravings, ephemera and illustrations. This commissioned work of art measures 67" x 40", features an antique 1915 map that spans the area from East Bay Delta to the San Francisco Bay and includes the town of Pittsburg, where Veterans Square is located. The artist artfully collaged a vibrant gradient of colored butterflies streaming up from the Town of Pittsburg and into and around San Francisco Bay, highlighted by a stunning border of flower vines, California poppies, Monarch caterpillars and dragonflies, all native to the area.

Studies have shown that integrating art into settings helps to cultivate a healing environment.  The design of this artwork was created to be uplifting and symbolize metamorphism; while at the same time providing a sense of belonging to residents as they enter the lobby of their home.

Estimates are that there are more than 10,000 veterans currently experiencing homelessness in California alone, so hopefully there will be many more of these types of housing projects in the future.  To learn more about the Veterans Square housing project visit www.housingtrustsv.org or  https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2022/07/apple-partnerships-are-helping-build-new-homes-and-new-starts-in-communities-across-california/
