PANTONE 2023 Color of the Year is Viva Magenta 18-1750, an unconventional color for an unconventional time. This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and empowering, and as Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute says, “PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all.”
So who is PANTONE and how is it that they get to choose the Color of the Year? PANTONE is an American company known for their standardized color matching system, Pantone Matching System (PMS), which is used in a variety of industries, including fashion design, graphic design, printing and even matching paint for your home. The company’s primary products include Pantone Guides with their series of related color swatches bound into small fan decks. Artist Wendy Gold uses the Pantone color matching system during the professional printing process of her fine art prints, to ensure the quality of the colors are as she originally designed them to be. Since 2000, PANTONE has hosted top secret meetings twice a year of representatives and experts from various nations’ color standards groups. After two days of presentations, discussions and debates, they choose a color for the following year.
When artist Wendy Gold learned that Viva Magenta was this year’s color, she was inspired to create a limited edition “Not all Who Wander are Lost” collage map art with the rainbow path collage on the world map featuring a new color scheme, based on Viva Magenta. We invite you to enjoy and be inspired.
